Patanjali describes the most pervasive and long-lasting fear as the fear of death. It is present in all people, even the wise. He calls it abhinivesha in the Yoga Sutra, book two, verses nine and ten: sva-rasa-vahi vidusho’pi tatha-rudho’bhiniveshah / te pratiprasava-heyah sukshmah, or “The will to live, flowing along by its own momentum, is rooted thus even in the sages. / These causes of affliction, in their subtle form, are to be overcome by the process of involution.” 3

It is my experience that I feel only two basic emotions: fear and love. However, there are many aspects to each. Take greed, for example. Greed springs from the fear that there isn’t enough of whatever you need. Another aspect of fear is anger, which is actually an attempt to defend against a harm that you perceive is coming. One of the most interesting things about fear is that it exists in relationship to the future. Consider this scenario. You are alone at home. You hear an unusual sound coming from the area near a back window. You react with fear: what will happen if an intruder breaks into my house? At another time, you think about the death of a loved one. You feel afraid. Even though it is a given that she will die someday, it has not happened yet—except in your imagination.
